Looks like my plan to blog more often hasn't been completely successful yet. At this point I don't have a ton to blog about. I have stuff going on just not a whole lot to say. So, here is what I have decided to do... with inspiration from Becky's page I am going to take this blog and tell you some interesting or random facts about the place I will be living, Naarden (and Holland in general). If you don't know what I am talking about then see my last blog.
*The unique Vesting (the great fortification), with its bastions deep into the moat, is one of the best preserved defensive works in the world. Established on its present site in the 14th Century.
*The earliest record of the finished town and the defences is on a map produced by Jacob van Deventer in 1560. During the l6th/17th and 18th centuries the Vesting was occupied at various times by the armies of Phillip II of Spain (1572), Louis XIV of France (1672) and briefly by the Prussians in 1787 followed by the armies of the French Revolution.
*Today Naarden is a thriving community with 17,000 inhabitants of which some 1,300 live within the Vesting.
*Naarden has what we would call a Theme Park. However, Im not so sure of the theme besides that its just a fun "play park". It's called, "Speelpark Oud Valkeveen" see it here on their official website http://www.oudvalkeveen.nl/tmp/
*Interesting Land facts and history are listed here :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naarden There is probably the best picture and mapping on that site for Naarden. So pretty!
Area (2006)
- Total 32.89 km² (12.7 sq mi)
- Land 21.38 km² (8.3 sq mi)
- Water 11.51 km² (4.4 sq mi)
*The local inhabitants recognized the town of Naarden in North Holland as that country’s capital long before Amsterdam took over the role.
Well thats all I have for today! Interesting stuff. Maybe next time I will tell a little more about the history. That is SUPER interesting I PROMISE! Anyhow, hope you enjoyed it.
