A Blip Of Life As An AuPair In Holland!

Mold

The fresh air streaming past my lobes seems to be lighter then normal. Usually I don't notice the woosh of wind over my headphones as it passes my ears. I regularly assign smells to the places I visit. I suppose it is a sensory memory that I enjoy filing in my brain. Here I find, the contradicting lightness of refreshing summer air clashing with stale spores of stagnant water that gets stirred with timid rain drops every few days, more revitalizing then it should. Nausea was my first impression when the smell that I can, for puns sake, pair with the smell of cheese. Yet, I feel it deserves a better description. To put is simple, Holland smells like Mold to me. Yes, this is the smell that I will title Holland in my memory bank for years to come. No matter what time of year I think it will fit nicely. All these thoughts spin through my head as the tires on my bike follow suit. We never will realize what a good bike ride and afternoon reading under the monkey tree at the park will do until we try it.

In general I am enjoying the change of weather. Mother nature has been fighting hard to keep its rain storms known, but I think the sunshine is slowly winning the battle. In bitter return the clouds a sending humidity in sly force. Creeping the "water in the air" into our atmosphere so unnoticed at first that it hits us in waves once we realize it is there. Still I am loving it so far. So much of the climate reminds me of Florida. Except this time I get to assign a whole new set of memories in a completely different category of my life. Its fantastic!

I am enjoying my day off by simply relaxing. My muscles and head are so sore that I can't imagine doing anything more strenuous with my free time. This weekend Becky and I made Market Fresh strawberry lemonade. Also, we went to a live concert of a band called the dodo's in Amsterdam. The band was from California and it was a cheap way to have a fun evening out. However, it turned into more then that when we missed our 12:30 train home and realized the next one wasn't tell 6am!!! In the end we survived by making friends and going dancing. However, the full and sleepless night was way to long for my taste. Actually for both of us. I had a great time though. We were just happy to get home and sleep. Thus, today I am happy with reading my book. By the way Tamsin The Host (to all of you same author as Twilight) is turning out to be great! Stephenie Meyer is amazing at recognizing human behavior and thought processes so well that her descriptions are grabbing. I would have never fallen for a book of this type before now. I must admit I had a hard time catching a full feel of the characters as individuals. However, now it seems more then intentional being that the characters are the same in part. Anyhow, I like it a lot. Hmmm Besides all of this thought process I have spewed at you all....I am good. Doing my best to appreciate everything I can. I will give you more updates as they come. Hopefully you all don't mind a blog of this sort. It a little more free flowing and comfortable for me to not have to edit sometimes. Love you all-Thanks for still reading ;D

I was telling Nick today that a certain brand of laundry detergent will forever remind me of my aunt, because the sheets and towels at her house, and the clothes I inherited from my cousin always smelled that way. It's funny how smells can connect you to people and places. And now mold will remind you of happy times in Holland - ah lovely!

I will also have to check out The Host eventually. Right now I'm reading Lord of the Flies.

Isn't it funny... I will probably never associate mold with Holland... Becuase where I live is so new and fresh... And for the most part it's miore open then where you live... Letting nothing live stagnantly! Hahaha! I always enjoy the smell of the fresh flowers and the soft breeze of the plants... That's my smell for Holland!

You need to write your own books, Tess. However, it doesn't smell like mold here and the nights are still cool enough to leave the windows open for a sweet, gentle orchard breeze ...haha, so we have it better!@#$% Miss you!
